Fifty Shades of Bay exists to create meaningful paths forward for mustangs and people navigating changed realities.
We believe both deserve to be seen as individuals rather than reduced to a label, a diagnosis, a behavior, a number, a price, or a chapter of their past.
And before we decide where either should go next—
we begin by understand-ing where they are now.
Two Journeys. One Mission.
Across America, thousands of mustangs live in government holding facilities waiting for what comes next.
Some were born wild and gathered from the range.
Some were born in holding.
Some have been adopted and returned.
Some will adapt quickly to domestic life.
Others will need considerably more time, patience, training, or a different path entirely.
At the same time, people everywhere find themselves living lives they did not expect.
Trauma changes things.
Depression changes things.
Anxiety changes things.
Loss changes things.
Failure changes things.
Sometimes even achieving the thing we thought would make us happy changes things
Fifty Shades of Bay begins with a simple belief: A changed reality can still become a meaningful life.
For horses.
For humans.
For all of us.
FOR THE MUSTANGS
Every horse deserves to be understood before its future is decided.
Mustangs are often discussed in enormous numbers.
How many are on the range.
How many have been gathered.
How many are in holding.
How many have been adopted.
How much they cost.
Those numbers matter.
But every number represents an individual horse.
A horse with instincts.
A history.
A personality.
Strengths.
Fears.
Potential.
Fifty Shades of Bay wants people to meet the individuals behind the numbers.
Our work begins with the Original Five—Ernest, Uno, B.E.E.F., Clifford, and Kuzco—five very different horses whose stories challenge assumptions about worth, behavior, belonging, trust, and what can happen when someone is given another chance.
Through the 50-state expedition, they will serve as ambassadors for the mustangs still waiting.
And the long-term mission reaches much farther.
We envision a permanent home where mustangs can receive thoughtful training and opportunities for successful adoption, where horses who need more time are given more time, and where sanctuary is available when a safe domestic placement is not reasonably appropriate.
Not every horse needs the same future.
Every horse deserves a meaningful chance at one.
FOR THE PEOPLE
We don't believe people need to become who they were before.
Sometimes there is no going back.
Life happens.
The person who exists afterward may carry experiences, fears, knowledge, scars, limitations, strengths, and perspectives the person before never had.
Fifty Shades of Bay isn't interested in pretending those chapters didn't happen.
And we don't promise to fix people.
Instead, we want to help create environments where people can slow down long enough to understand where they are, reconnect with themselves, discover tools and support, build trust, experience connection, rediscover purpose, and begin imagining what moving forward could look like.
Success does not mean life never becomes difficult again.
It means perhaps the next time the road disappears, you recognize what's happening sooner.
You have another tool.
You know how to ask for help.
You remember that being stuck does not mean you will stay stuck forever.
You know you've found another way forward before.
And maybe you believe you can do it again.
The goal isn't to become untouchable.
The goal is to become better equipped for whatever comes next.
Why Bring Them Together?
Because mustangs understand changed realities.
A gathered wild horse cannot undo the gather.
A horse born in holding cannot rewrite its first years.
A returned horse cannot erase the experiences that brought it back.
But the next chapter hasn't been written yet.
Humans know something about that too.
There is something powerful about standing beside another living being that does not need you to explain every chapter of your story before meeting you exactly where you are.
Horses respond to what is happening now.
They notice pressure.
Energy.
Boundaries.
Consistency.
Communication.
Trust.
They don't care about your résumé.
They don't know your diagnosis.
They don't know how much money you make, what you've accomplished, what you've failed at, or what someone else decided you were worth.
They simply meet the person standing in front of them.
And in learning to understand the horse standing in front of us, we may begin learning something about ourselves.
The horses lead.
Qualified professionals and staff facilitate.
People discover.
UNDERSTAND-ING
Understanding isn't something we finish. It's something we practice.
This is the foundation beneath everything we are building.
Before correcting, we get curious.
Before judging a behavior, we ask what may be underneath it.
Before deciding someone—or some horse—is difficult, stubborn, lazy, aggressive, hopeless, broken, or incapable, we try to understand what we're actually seeing.
That doesn't mean there are no boundaries.
Understanding is not the same as excusing harmful behavior.
Compassion does not eliminate responsibility.
And understanding does not mean staying stuck. It means we begin with better information.
Because when we understand more, we can respond differently.
From understanding can grow trust. > From trust, courage. > From courage, connection. > From connection, purpose. > And from purpose, another reason to move forward.
We deliberately write it:
Understand-ing.
Because neither horses nor humans are finished products.
We are still learn-ing.
Adapt-ing.
Trust-ing.
Connect-ing.
Grow-ing.
Become-ing.
The work continues.
So does the story.
Our Promise:
Mission over money.
Education over manipulation.
Transparency over outrage.
Collaboration over conflict.
Understanding before judgment.
What We Will Not Do
The way we accomplish the mission matters just as much as the mission itself.
We will not use fear when trust can accomplish more.
We will not force every horse into the same mold.
We will not treat horses as props in a human-healing story.
We will not treat people's pain as fundraising material.
We will not promise that five days with horses will fix someone's life.
We will not ask people to surrender their privacy in exchange for receiving help.
We will not measure human or equine worth by price, performance, popularity, productivity, or how easily someone fits the plan.
We will not allow money to become more important than the horses, the people, the team, or the integrity of the mission.
And when we get something wrong, we intend to be willing to learn from it.
THE FIRST 50
The first chapter of this mission begins with five mustangs and 50 states.
Beginning September 1, 2027, Fifty Shades of Bay plans to start traveling across America.
In every state, the Original Five mustangs will carry the mission through a 50-mile awareness ride.
Communities will be invited to be a part of the story.
People will meet mustangs as individuals.
And Fifty Shades of Bay plans to host five-day horse-centered Healing Intensives designed to create time, space, tools, community, privacy, and opportunities for people to do their own work.
We will listen.
We will learn.
We will adapt.
And we'll share what we're learning along the way.
Because the expedition isn't only about taking Fifty Shades of Bay to all 50 states.
It's about discovering what Fifty Shades of Bay needs to become next.
THE LONGER ROAD
The expedition is the beginning, not the destination.
The long-term vision is a permanent home built around mustangs, people, learning, and purpose.
A place where mustangs entering domestic life can receive time, thoughtful training, and opportunities for adoption.
A place where horses for whom domestic placement isn't appropriate can receive responsible sanctuary.
A place where people can participate in deeper horse-centered mental-health and wellness programs supported by appropriately qualified professionals.
A place where the public can learn about mustangs, land, behavior, adoption, training, and the complicated realities surrounding America's wild horses.
And a place willing to carefully study what happens when mustangs and humans navigating profound change are given the opportunity to move forward alongside one another.
Research will not exist to prove that we're right.
It will exist to help us learn.
If something works, we want to understand why.
If something doesn't, we want to know that too.
And if what we learn can help another horse, another person, another organization, or another community—
we want to share it.
The goal isn't to build an empire.
The goal is to build something useful.
WHAT SUCCESS WOULD LOOK LIKE
Twenty-five years from now, success won't be measured by how famous Fifty Shades of Bay became.
It will look more like this:
Fewer mustangs waiting indefinitely behind holding-facility fences because more meaningful pathways exist for them.
More people seeing mustangs as individuals rather than numbers.
Horses receiving the time and support they actually need rather than being discarded because they didn't progress on someone else's timeline.
People who once felt hopeless knowing how to recognize when they're becoming stuck—and knowing where to turn for help.
Evidence helping effective equine-assisted mental-health programs become more accessible.
Land remaining available for horses, wildlife, nature, and people who need somewhere quiet enough to hear themselves think.
Other organizations taking what we've learned and making it better.
Former participants building meaningful lives that may look nothing like the lives they originally planned.
And an organization strong enough to continue doing the work long after the people who founded it are gone.
OUR PROMISE
We will try to understand before we judge.
We will choose connection before correction.
We will honor the horse standing in front of us.
We will honor the person standing in front of us.
We will protect welfare, dignity, privacy, and choice.
We will tell the truth about what we're learning—including the parts that don't go according to plan.
We will celebrate progress without demanding perfection.
We will remember that different does not mean less.
And when the original path disappears—
we will help one another look for another way forward.
